The Poet’s Corner is a FREE workshop meant to empower participants to write creatively with different styles of poetry and structures.
The program aims to create a nurturing space for emerging poets and writers to document their own stories and emotions. Writers create unique pieces at every workshop and are encouraged to participate in an open mic session at the end of that same session.
The Poet’s Corner at Art Hub is a workshop designed to empower teenage participants in writing creatively and using poetry to help them build confidence to tell their own stories, discover more about themselves, and explore new means of expressing their wants, needs, and desires. These poetry workshops introduce the world of spoken word poetry and performing arts and culminate in a presentation of their original works.
The program will help participants build on their social skills, such as community building, artistic expression, and public speaking. It is an outlet for students to express themselves with themes surrounding close-to-home topics such as growing up, gun violence, racial and gender inequities, family relationships, and future visioning.
Students will learn how to use their writing in an interdisciplinary manner. Four guest artists with different artistic backgrounds will co-lead an interdisciplinary workshop throughout the program. We will bring in dance, music, theater, and visual art. As students continue to develop their confidence and excitement in writing, they will work toward creating published work to complete this engagement. Oye Group will create a published anthology featuring the students’ work and testimonies by staff and students alike, which will be presented to every student, teacher, and administrative staff member who helped make this partnership possible. Students will get a stipend for participating and completing the full program.
